The Club - Nixons Revenge (1980)

The precursor band to Desperation Squad was an anarchaic outfit entitled Nixons Revenge. Nixons Revenge existed mostly in the minds of it's primary founders: Mr. P, Alan Waddington, Brian Waddington and Jack Cheese until a stroke of luck appeared in the form of a live show engineered by "Jumpin" Joe Gonzo, who was a fellow DJ at KSAK with Mr. P and worked with both Mr. P and Brian at Glass Arts of California, an assembly plant in the City of Industry. Gonzo's band Prisoner was scheduled to play the Mt. Sac Track Club Dance and Joe took the courageous step of allowing Nixons Revenge to perform during the intermission.

When Nixons Revenge hit the stage there was an almost immediate revolt among the audience. During one song the track coach tried in vain to unplug the band, succeeding only in interrupting the live recording. Nixons Revenge completed its controversial yet transcendent performance with an on stage girl fight that broke down into a marshmallow throwing frenzy!

"The Club," written by the Waddington brothers, is a skewered paean to the Diamond Point Swim Club. It was the first song ever played by Nixons Revenge.

Historical notes: An "additional" lyric was added early in the 80s by J.P. Lott, and is noted here. Some controversy over the lyrics remain as Billy Cabeza claims to have helped write part of the song. This claim has not been proven. "The Club" wound up being adopted by the Squad for their first live shows in 1984 and can still be heard on occasion today, being played once on Warped Tour 2001 and as recently as August 2003 at 51 Buckingham.

The Lyrics

What for we pay our dues?

For the pool that we don't use!

The club, the club, the club club club

They call the club, club, the club club club

They call the club!

Hit the ball, you dork!

Let's destroy the tennis court!

At the club, the club, the club club club

They call the club, club, the club club club

They call the club!

Wear a cap, wear a pin

To swim in urine!

The club, the club, the club club club

They call the club, club, the club club club

They call the club!

Get some friends, get some booze

For fifty dollars, you lose!

The club, the club, the club club club

They call the club, club, the club club club

They call the club!

(Lyric added by J. P. Lott)

Used to have a parking lot

Till the Fritzs' stole the spot!
